Mandela Month Collect-a-Book Drive – July 2015

Collect-a-Can, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education and ReaderLympics, will be running a fun-filled Collect-a-Book drive across South Africa in celebration of Mandela Month, taking place this July.

What activities are planned?

This Mandela Month, Collect-a-Can and partners will be reaching out to underprivileged schools, encouraging learners to read by bringing books to the children and providing them with the opportunity to listen to inspiring storytellers, ultimately teaching them that reading can be fun!

Why a book drive?

The aim of the book drive is to bring reading books to schools, ultimately improving South Africa’s literacy rate.

Which schools will benefit?

Five underprivileged primary schools located close to the Collect-a-Can branches, including Chuma Primary School from Khayelitsha, Cape Town; Khalipha Primary School in Umlazi, Durban; Boepakitso Primary School from Diepkloof, Johannesburg; Bokamoso Primary School from Soshanguve, Pretoria and Zitha Primary School from Evaton, Vanderbijlpark have been selected to benefit from the book drive.

When will the book drive take place?

South Africans are encouraged to collect books from now until Friday, 24 July 2015 when the books will be distributed.

How can organisations or individuals get involved?

• By donating used and/or new children’s reading books in the following languages: - IsiZulu, Tswana, Sesotho, Xhosa and Sepedi.
• By volunteering time to read to the children at the schools visited by the book drive on Friday, 24 July 2015. The following schools are in need of reading volunteers:
