Collect-a-Can’s Environmental Education Strategy has two legs:
1) Physical involvement in can recovery for recycling 2) The incorporation of recycling in the educational curriculum
Schools are invited to participate in a competition where they are rewarded for their efforts to recover cans – mostly from household waste – for recycling.
Collect-a-Can assists teachers with educational tools to teach the learners about the benefits of recycling and how it works.
In many cases recycling has been included in subjects like mathematics, science and life skills. In the case of mathematics for example, weekly recoveries are tabled, converted into graphs showing trends, etc.
An approximate 250 000 learners are annually involved in the competition which has been on-going since 1993. The learners are educated to be sensitive, informed, aware and activists for the environment.
