Collect-a-Can operates regional and national school competitions in South Africa. Schools can raise funds for themselves as well as stand a chance to win monthly and annual prizes, while environmental awareness is being created.

These cash prizes to the value of more than R260 000 are sponsored by environmentally concerned companies such as Nampak, Coca-Cola Canners, The South African Breweries and Amalgamated Beverage Industries of which the national winners in two categories each wins R25 000.00.  There is a total of R19 000 to be won monthly.  Apart from the prizes, schools are paid cash for the cans collected.  An approximate one million children in schools throughout Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Western Cape, Free STate, and North West provinces, are reached through this campaign annually to sensitise youth on the importance of recycling.

This has played an important role in practical environmental education.

Collect-a-Can has joined forces with the MySchool initiative to get the recycling message out to more schools. My School will support Collect-a-Can as a communications partner and will promote the recycling message and educate learners on good waste management habits such as recycling.

How the South African Schools Competition works
