The Waste Management Bill When Collect-a-Can started its operations, there was no unified policy or body of laws in South Africa to cope with the growth of waste. The public trust in waste management was low. There was automatic opposition to any new waste site proposals. In 1996, a major project was launched among several South African Government departments to address the waste crisis with one holistic programme. The Environmental Act is based on the "polluter pay" principle. The South African Government has subsequently promulgated various additional environmental laws and regulations and has taken a strong view on the contribution of discarded packaging to litter. In this respect, various memorandums of understanding have been signed by the South African Government and various packaging manufacturers. Various other Governments on the sub-continent are also involved in similar governance. Collect-a-Can supports all activity that will contribute to a cleaner environment. |
